“Stood three infernal Furies ecked with blood, who had the limbs of women and their ways but wore, as girdles, snakes of deepest green; small serpents and horned vipers formed their hairs, and these were used to bind their bestial temples.”
The Furies are three female spirits of justice and vengeance, usually hunting those who have killed a member of their own family.
In Iconography, the Erinyes (Alecto, Megaera and Tisiphone) are represented as winged spirits. Three women with serpent manes and mouths gaping with ghastly screeches. The jewels they wear, are, like them, fearsome and fantastic beasts.
