In the oldest versions of the myth of Endymion, he is loved by Selene. It is Selene who eternally puts the young and beautiful shepherd to sleep in order to love him while he sleeps. The figure of Selene was progressively confused with that of Diana, a divinity also linked to the moon, who also replaced her in the story of Endymion. The presence of Diana in the fresco takes on the meaning of underlining the strength of the feeling of love: even the austere hunting goddess can give in to her calls.
